Notice and Note Sign Posts
Homework: Independent Reading with Notice and Note
For homework, you’ll be reading your independent reading book and actively looking for Notice and Note signposts. These signposts are special moments in a story—like when a character asks a tough question, or when something repeats again and again—that signal something important is happening.
As you read, pause when you notice a signpost. Take a moment to “stop and jot” in your notebook: write down the quote or moment you found and a quick note about why it matters.
Doing this will help you:
-
Slow down and think more deeply about the text.
-
Notice the choices authors make.
-
Strengthen your comprehension.
-
Build your analysis skills for class discussions and writing.
The more you practice identifying signposts, the more you’ll uncover the deeper meaning in what you read.
